My horse gets thrush in his front right hoof constantly...it seems like every time the farrier comes out he has it...so i go week after week treating it...get it under control...and boom...he's got it again...

Does anyone have any advice on how to get it gone and keep it gone?

P.S. I use Beach (Bleach) and Formeldehyde(sp) to get rid of it...but it just keeps comming back

Is your ground quite wet and mooshy??? Easy boots work great if your horse is constantly in wet ground. Adelarde gets Thrush too, only when he is standing in mucky, wet or damp conditions.

I have to keep his stall clean and dry.

My Ferrier told me to Koppertox his feet daily for 2 weeks when he had it. And then when I got it under control, Koppertox his feet once a week.

I do that constantly, and to tell you the truth, IT HAS NEVER COME BACK!!!

I also feed my horse Ferriers Formula, THAT STUFF IS AMAZING!!!!!

we have dry sandy ground...and when it does rain it all runs down the hill away from their run in so i dont see how he gets it so often...i just think some horses must be more suseptible to it by how deep the grooves in their hooves are..but i'll look into that koppertox and the Ferriers Formula

As the former mom of a thrush king, you may want to just be careful with the bleach. Make sure it's quite diluted because it can be almost as harmful as thrush itself. I used a combo of koppertox and thrush-x and that did quite nicely. I did the bleach thing at first based on a suggestion from a barnmate and Dallas ended up with a pretty nasty infection from it. Play it safe is my suggestion and use products meant for thrush.

Actually Zeus the Formeldehyde(sp) is better than any of the others that have been suggested so far but it is very dangerous, it is a suspected carcinogen because of the formalin....by all means stop the bleach. Koppertox is really good stuff, it is what I use for a preventative.

To get this nasty mess under control cut away all the black rotten smelly junk. wash it out with betadine, dry well, then with a mixture of Half 2.5%Glutaraldehyde solution and half 70% isoprople alcohol (placed in a small spray bottle) squirt the infected area everyday for 1 week then once a week for 1 month. IMPORTANT: you must use rubber gloves when useing this and you must not get it on the skin of the horse.....

Formeldehyde and Glutaraldehyde are not the same the latter is 4 times more effective and is far less toxitidy and with no report as of July this year of being a carcinogen.

Also, does your horse have contracted heals?? with your care and no wet enviroment this is the only thing I can think of that would be keeping his feet in disaray!

IF you try this and it does come back then have your farrier catterize the frog.
