Three of my four horses have rain rot (rain scald)-- I have picked scabs for 2 weeks, and it wont go away! I have tried Mikro-tek, Iodine Scrub and nothing seems to help. Does anyone know of anything that will clear this up?

I've been through rainrot, not fun. I've picked the scabs and all of that fun stuff. The thing that worked for me was betadine soap. I had to scrub those legs down daily (or every other day) and I used one of those little flea comb/bot thingies to pull the gunk off. Poor horse's legs bled every time because it was so bad when I bought him, but it cleared up after about 2 weeks for me.
Welcome to the forum and don't worry too much. You'll get lots of suggestions here, too.

Tino is doing MUCH better now (regarding the link MIHorselover posted). I also came across this link in the past
http://www.equusite.com/articles/health/healthRainRot.shtml
We made sure tino was very dry before he went back in his stall and made sure to use the right ointments, since some are very thick and will trap moister and make the problem worse. The ointment just sits on top of the skin trapping the water underneath which leads to more problems. So make sure you get rid of all the excess hair you can and make sure they're dry after each application and wash
Keep us posted, and welcome to the forums, glad to have ya! :D

Get an industrial sized bottle of baby oil and drench him in it. Don't wash it off. The oil will choke out the fungus spores and keep them from spreading. I swear by it! Wash him with betadine or iodine (pretty much the same thing) soap. Let the shampoo sit on him for at least 10 min. and when you rinse him, rinse him really really well. Once he dries, douse him with the baby oil and let it stay on. Don't rinse it off. Just keep reapplying for about a week. Then wash him again in regular shampoo or dawn dish soap to get the grease off him. If its still bad or doesn't appear to be going away, do it again. Don't pick dry scabs! That spreads the fugus spores. make sure they are wet and make sure you scrub him right after you pick scabs.

We battle with rain rot every year around here. We get alot of rain in the spring and thunderstorms in the summer and rain again in the winter. I have used alot of the products . And then an old farmer told me to just mix Bleach and water in a spray bottle. Cheap and efective. Rain rot is a fungus and the bleach kills it. The water helps to dilute the bleach so not to harm your horse. Works for me just thought I'd share.
