Yesterday, a friend of mine was throwing a bonfire party. I happily agreed to stop by the farm about four hours early to help out with everything. We finished the setting up and even stretched a little fence line with enough time for a quick trail ride in her woods. (Thank goodness I brought my saddle! lol)
We saddle up quickly, somehow all the horses have been brushed.....hmm I think this was planned ;). I grab the short straw and end up on the massive dappled gray freight train, Dice. He stands a whole lot better for the saddle this time, and takes the bit willingly....maybe this won't be so bad.... My friend is already done saddling her POA and her boyfriend's friend is done also. We just wait a minute for the cute thrid guy to bridle an onrey sorrel I usually ride named Kali, and we're off.
My friend is in the lead with her bf following, leaving me and cutie to ourselves. The ride's going wonderful! I'm overjoyed! Cutie looks back at me, and his face turns red. "You're a lot braver than me." He says, giving me an adorable boy-like grin. "Why's that?" I ask. "Well I heard Dice hates the creek...."
The creek? What!? No way, the kid must not know what he's saying. Last time I ride Dice, the creek was the only time he behaved. I explain this to the Cutie, and he just shurgs and turns back around.
The rides going great! Dice is acting perfect. We just have to cross the creek and we'll be done. My friend goes in, and of course her pony does wonderful. The bf follows, his horse not hesitating one bit. Now the cute guy, his mare hesitates a bit, but she goes. Dice stops completely.
"Hey guys!" I yell up, "Give me and Dice a sec." Then I direct my voice to the gelding I'm on. "Okay boy, walk." I give the comand slow and clear. Nothing. "Walk." I try once more, this time with a little leg. The gelding bolts into the deepest part of the creek (It's to the tops of my boots. PS I'm 5'3" and in shrot stirrups and this gelding is pretty close to 17 HH.) The gelding starts freaking out, he doesn't buck, he just starts walking around, ignoring my attempts at steering him back on track. Oh great, he's laying down. I'm in the water....i hate water, actuaully terrified of it....i hang on when the gelding somehow gets back up, and now I'm p*****. "Get your fat a$$ outta this creek so I can kill you!" I yell in a deep voice that you wouldn't expect from me.
Amazingly enough, the gelding listens and jumps out of the creek. Then he starts to buck. My friend and the two guys have been standing there in shock the whole time, being no help. Dice stops, and acts like he's a perfect pony. i cuss a lot and we go back to the barn. My saddle is soaked, my clothes are drenched, and I still have the rest of the night to look forward to.
Looking back, I laugh. Sort of. I lost my temper, and that hardly ever happens with horses. If you're wondering about the previous time I rode the gelding, he broke three toes and my leg. That was two years ago. He's a devil. Grr.
