We would like to announce that we'll be beta testing a new system for real-time spam filtering. As E-E has been growing so have the number of spammers!!! :{} Alas, we have a fix for their spammy ways!

The filter will mostly go un-noticed on the forum. All new posts are scanned by Akismet (Akismet.com) and based on other spammers or matching certain criteria. If a thread matches these rule sets it will go immediately into a moderation queue where an E-E staff member can review it and optionally approve or delete the thread.

This is a test, it was just installed today so bare with us as we tweak things around. If you find any of your new threads are not showing up please contact us and we'll check the moderation queue for the spam filter. It automatically learns what spam is and can learn from its mistakes in the future so it "may" be bumpy at first but we dont anticipate it being to bad.

We've done a pretty good job eliminating and deleting users and spam within a short period of time after it hit the forum, this is another step to ensure its never in front of our members to begin with.. because its ugh! annoying! ::rasberry

Let us know your thoughts or concerns, any problems please hollar at any staff member

Awesome! Spam sucks and it is sometimes very adult themed. I had a forum years ago and shut it down due to spammers doing very adult themed sites, since a lot of children under 18 were on my site, it was the responsible thing to do. I think you guys do a great job, I have never seen a Spam post on here!

UPDATE!

It was brought to our attention that there were a few small glitches with the spam filter (as possibly expected). We have now setup user group promotions to help manage the spam filters much more effectively.

The promotion from the spam filter is as follows.

All new users that join the board must be a member for at least "greater than or equal to" 2 full days and have a minimum of 10 posts before the promotion is granted.

All users that match or exceed these requirements will be promoted into the next user group. If you notice ANY user group permission issues PLEASE contact us for an immediate fix. We duplicated the current registered user group and made a better one.

Things updated!
There are now greater storage capacities for pager msgs, larger attachement sizes, private message tracking and a higher storage volume of private messages for the promoted group.

Our spam filters have been working ok however we feel this will allow our regular users to post at ease while keeping a small constraint on fly-by-spammers that sign up and post once or twice.

If you are a new user and you feel you're being filtered when you shouldn't be PLEASE contact any staff member.

P.S - A user will know they've tripped the spam filter if when you post a thread or reply to a thread you will receive a "Your post/thread will be moderated...." If this happens and you know for a fact you're not spamming you must contact us immediately so we can fix the problem.

With this new system we do not see any problems for regular members whatsoever, however the line above is for just in case :)
