Who Here competes in English Pleasure?Doc_Jumper 06-03-2007, 01:04 PM Okay...i have notice that there isnt many topics..uhh 'up to date!' so i decided to make one so we can see who all here competes in english pleasure!! anyone!!?? 4Tryance 06-03-2007, 06:22 PM I did in some of the pleasure classes at our local hunter shows last year. These classes however, are in the unrated ring. I haven't any this year though but Tanner wants to take Sophia in a few walk, trot, canter english pleasure classes. I mostly compete in equitation classes and hit a few hunter classes at each show. Taylor 06-03-2007, 08:38 PM I have yet to compete in English Pleasure, but I do ride english pleasure...just for the heck of it! EventGirl 06-03-2007, 10:50 PM I used to when I did allot of Flat Shows back in B.C Canada. EnglishPleasure is one of the biggest and most common class offered at Flat Shows. EnglishPleasure is one of the biggest and most common class offered at Flat Shows. We have a green pony who is showing in the Pleasure Pony division as a stepping stone to the children's pony division. The circuits we show on (VHSA/MHSA) the pleasure classes consist of: -1 u/s class -1 o/f class -and either a hack (2 fences 25%, u/s 75%) or a handy class (o/f with a trot fence, halt/back and a hand gallop) -at bigger shows you will also see a fourth class: Pleasure Park Mount which is an u/s with a hand gallop and a halt/back The Handy and Park Mount are often interchanged. Doc_Jumper 06-14-2007, 08:38 PM Anyone else? I didn't know this many ppl competed in english pleasure that goes to this forum! I have an APHA gelding (who is now 15 and retired, for now) that I used to show in Hunter Under Saddle (English Pleasure). He is 16.2 and gorgeous so we did really well. We have our Youth Superior in HUS, in fact it was the first one we got! I loved showing HUS because when I started riding at age 7, I did Pony Hunter so after learning all the Western stuff it was nice to get back into my English saddle and show everyone what I had!! :) LoveTheSaddlebreds 09-22-2008, 02:22 PM I show english pleasure sometimes. It tis fun but now I do mainly saddleseat. aww, now I miss pleasure, I'm gonna go out and do pleasure pony next time I show! :P Tiffany01 10-02-2008, 03:04 AM English Pleasure All the way! OnAprylsWings 12-19-2008, 01:59 PM I love english pleasure horse. its apryl's best flat class, she's such a hunt horse! Hazeligrl22 12-20-2008, 01:47 PM English Pleasure is what I've ridden my Thoroughbred since I got him several years ago. We've been showing English Pleasure at Hunter shows for the past five or so years. Then we just begun Dressage this past Summer, so now we're competing in both disciplines in different low circuits. =) We love it. morgan 01-05-2009, 05:24 PM I get so confused about english pleasure. We ride morgans and english pleasure is saddleseat and hunt pleasure is what qh or paint owners call english pleasure. With arabians english pleasure is saddleseat. Why do the different breeds have a different name for hunt and english pleasure? Dolsey 01-06-2009, 04:47 PM Can someone please explain to me what hunt/english/saddle seat is lol?! What's the difference? What do you do in it? morgan 01-07-2009, 02:03 PM Can someone please explain to me what hunt/english/saddle seat is lol?! What's the difference? What do you do in it? Hi Dolsey! Your best bet is to go to youtube and search for hunter pleasure, english pleasure or saddleseat. Different breeds call it different things so I will explain from a morgan horse perspective. All of the classes call for a walk, trot and canter. Hunter pleasure also calls for an extended walk, trot and canter and will also ask for a hand gallop. The clothing is similiar to what the British used to wear on fox hunts. Knee length boots, breeks and a hunt jacket. You also wear a helmet. The saddle is called a hunt saddle. Now english pleasure and saddleseat are the same. You are ask for a walk, trot, road trot, which is a more animated trot, and a canter. The clothing and saddle are very different. The clothing is jods, day coat and a homburg or a suit that is called a saddleseat suit. The saddle is called a cutback saddle. If I knew how to put pictures in I would put them in to show you the difference but I haven't figured that out yet. Your best bet is to go to youtube and search either morgan english pleasure or saddleseat horses, and for hunter pleasure. SDGold 01-25-2009, 06:04 PM i do i do! I think this was a bit off... english pleasure and saddle seat are not alike and the gaits are different as well as the tack. There is a difference in all of the classes, though not huge. English pleasure is judged mostly on the horse. The horse needs to be smooth and have free flowing gaits. Horses that work on a loose rein are great, most are ridden "on the buckle". Horses can be asked for a walk, trot, canter, extented trot and hand gallop and may be asked to do a pattern, but not very often. Also in command classes, they can be asked for counter canter and sitting trot. Horses have a generally low, headset with very little or no rein contact. Horses are generally very flat kneed movers with very little hock action as well. Here is a video of an english pleasure class: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKykig_jDIY Hunter Pleasure, or Hunter Under Saddle as it's most commonly called here is also judged on the horse, but in a different manner. Because the horses are judged also on their ability to jump. A good working horse can usually jump with ease, where as I see a lot of just plain ol pleasure horses lugging around on their forehands, not really working at all. Horses can be asked for a walk, trot, canter, extended trot and hand gallop. Hunter Hack classes may also include up to 2 fences of varrying height to judge the horses actual ability over fences. Horses have again a low headset, but have slight rein contact. Horses are generally flat kneed movers, but a bit more knee action isn't a bad thing. Horses generally have a nice engaged hind end and working gaits. Here is a video of a Hunter Under Saddle Class: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d_I4PfNnNI Saddle Seat is by far the most different. The tack and equipment are different, and the breeds seen there aren't generally the same as pleasure classes. I've only ridden Saddle seat once in my life and the closest thing I can relate it to is dressage because of the position the saddle puts you in. Horses in saddle seat have much more knee action than both HUS and EP. In the video, note the higher head carriage, tighter rein, and way more knee action. Horses are sometimes fitted with weighted shoes or chains to increase the knee action during training. Heres a Saddle Seat Class Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6xea0fBfSk Hope this helps some and didn't just confuse you. I've been showing English Pleasure and HUS for 14 years now. morgan 01-26-2009, 03:36 PM I think this was a bit off... english pleasure and saddle seat are not alike and the gaits are different as well as the tack. Remember I said from a morgan perspective. English Pleasure is ridden in a cutback saddle and saddleseat clothes. You absolutely do not use a hunt seat in english pleasure in morgan or saddlebred classes and I do believe arabian. You are coming from a stock horse perspective which is why I said I was coming from a morgan perspective. The breeds are very different and the classes are named different.:) |
