HOw hard is it to train a horse to do barrels? And what would you do to train them. I'm asking b/c my friend (who's only in her teens) wants to buy a horse and some of the horses need training. I'm trying to steer her away from young ones that need training, but she wont really listen. So training advice would be good! Plz and thank you!

Depends on the level she wants to compete at...it can be easy...if you know what you're doing. And yes, if she's new to barrel racing...Don't be an idiot and buy a youngster. :)

its hard to train any horse if you dont have experience in that field... if shes wanting to get into barrel racing for the first time, she needs to bite the bullet and pay more for a finished barrel racer, or get a horse whos already broke and work with a trainer.. its never good to get an unbroke or greenbroke horse unless you have experience with them

Agreed...

If she isn't experienced in barrel racing and/or training young horses, she shouldn't get one. Most people that try training a barrel horse end up with a hardmouthed psycho if they don't have the experience and knowledge on how to deal with horses bred to do barrels/race.

I agree it is much better to buy a seasoned barrel horse than to go for something green if you aren't experienced. Not only is it dangerous but can also really discourage someone[ because training horses sure can be FRUSTERATING! lol

its very hard to train a horse on barrels if you really dont know how.. best bet buy on finished from a reliable person. or save the money and send to a good trainer for at least 30 days of training.. trust me... took me a good 6 months to learn what i know on barrels and training a horse to run them the right way!
